Recognising the need for a more professional approach to mediation, the United Nations has enhanced its operational readiness to implement and support mediation efforts.  A key innovation in this regard was the establishment of the Mediation Support Unit (MSU) within the Policy and Mediation Division (PMD) of the UN Department of Political Affairs (DPA) and, within the unit, the creation of a Standby Team of mediation experts. With the goal of supporting relevant actors to achieve a just and sustainable peace through the pacific settlement of disputes, the unit engages in and supports a wide range of operational activities  and projects and works closely with a number of partners.
