The Military and the Constitution: The Cases of Algeria, Pakistan and Turkey

This Arab Reform Initiative paper analyzes the main characteristics of civil-military relations in politics, in particular the circumstances surrounding the military''s intervention in politics, the main procedural categories used to institutionalize the political role of the military, and the influence of these procedures on the transition to democracy and democratic consolidation. The paper studies the cases of Algeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, those most regularly involved in debates over the transition in Egypt.
