Term Lengths for Judges of the Highest Ordinary Courts

This option paper compares constitutional provisions related to term lengths for judges of the highest ordinary courts. The sample of constitutions reviewed consists of over 700 constitutions enacted since 1789. In addition to detailing the trends with regard to term lengths, the report provides sample constitutional provisions divided into the following two categories: 1) Life terms and 2) Life terms with mandatory retirement at a certain age.
