During the annual Security Council Open Debate on women, peace and security held on 24 October 2024, the Secretary-General’s “Common Pledge for Women’s Full, Equal and Meaningful Participation in Peace Processes” was officially launched.

In line with the landmark resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security, the United Nations in its mediation and peacemaking efforts, has sought to fast-track women’s direct participation in formal peace talks as part of promoting women’s participation at all levels.

By signing the Common Pledge of the Secretary-General, global mediation actors, including UN Member States, Regional Organizations and other mediation actors can join the United Nations in committing to take concrete steps on women’s full, equal and meaningful participation in all peace processes of which they are a part.

In May 2025, DPPA with the permanent missions of Angola and Switzerland to the United Nations co-hosted an expert-level discussion among adopters to share good practice and lessons learned on institutionalizing Common Pledge Commitments (see summary here). All adopters are encouraged to report on progress in advance of next year’s 25th Anniversary Security Council Open Debate on women, peace and security.

On 28 October 2025, DPPA with the Deputy Secretary-General and UN Women hosted a High-Level meeting on the Secretary-General’s Common Pledge to hear from women who have shaped peace processes as negotiators, civil society activists and mediators, and to showcase how adopters of the Common Pledge are moving from commitment to concrete implementation across the Common Pledge’s four commitment areas. (See concept note here. Watch the event on UN Web TV here.).
