The Composition of Constitutional Courts

This document consists of a report on the composition of constitutional courts around the world. The data is based on responses to questionnaires sent to states (a copy of which is included at the end of the report). The paper reports on: the various systems of appointment of judges of constitutional courts, and their aims the eligibility requirements for members of the court and any provisions made for representation of minorities the role of President of the constitutional court, including how he/she is appointed the age requirements and terms of members of the constitutional courts the roles incompatible with an appointment as judge of a constitutional court the immunity provided judges of the constitutional court dismissal of judges of the constitutional court the relationship between the nature of the composition of the court and the powers exercised by it the feedback expressed from current constitutional judges on improvements that could be made. The document sets out in table form a comparison of the responses provided by states.
