International Consensus - Essential Elements of Democracy

In the aftermath of the Arab Spring, this report by Democracy Reporting International looks at a UN General Assembly''s Resolution from 2004 that sets out seven essential elements of democracy, namely: separation and balance of power independence of the judiciary a pluralistic system of political parties and organisations respect for the rule of law accountability and transparency free, independent and pluralistic media and respect for human and political rights. It explores the implications of these principles in an attempt to articulate what a democratic state ought to look like.&ampnbsp
