The Length and Term Limits of the Head of State

This option report compares constitutional provisions related to the term length and term limits of heads of states. The sample of constitutions reviewed consists of almost 600 constitutions enacted since 1789. In addition to detailing the trends with regard to term length and term limits, the report provides sample constitutional provisions for the following categories: 1. Only one term permitted, total, 2. Only two terms permitted, total, 3. No successive terms permitted, but multiple non successive terms permitted, 4. Only two successive terms permitted, but multiple non successive terms permitted, and 5. Explicitly no term limits.
