Parliamentary Oversight of the Security Sector - Principles, Mechanisms and Practices

This handbook by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces concerns security issues and the role of parliamentary oversight. Separate sections describe all stages of the national security policy cycle as well as relevant international regulations, explain the different components of the security sector, examine the tools and instruments that parliaments can use to oversee the security sector, deal with circumstances which pose a specific challenge to security such as states of emergency, analyze the resources related to the security sector, discuss personnel and recruitment in the security sector, and deal with the material resources of the sector.
